FAQ About Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

What is the difference between buttercream and frosting?

Buttercream is a type of frosting that contains butter (hence the name). The frosting is a type of icing that does not contain butter.

Can I just add cocoa powder to vanilla buttercream?

If you want to add a chocolatey twist to your vanilla buttercream, you can add cocoa powder! Simply mix in some sifted cocoa powder until you’ve reached the desired flavor and consistency. And voila – you’ve got yourself a delicious chocolate buttercream! Or you can use our Chocolate Emulco instead of the cocoa powder for a more consistent and flavorful buttercream.

How long does chocolate buttercream icing last?

Assuming you’re talking about store-bought icing, it should last quite a while. The butter in the icing will keep it from going wrong, and as long as you keep it sealed in a container, it should be fine.

Now, if you’re talking about homemade icing, it depends on how fresh the ingredients you used are. Buttercream icing made with fresh butter will only last a few days, but if you use margarine or shortening, it will last much longer. So really, it all comes down to what your recipe calls for.
