We know, the banoffee pie doesn’t have the most appealing name; it just doesn’t roll off the tongue that easily. Still, this creamy combination of bananas, drizzled caramel, chocolate and whipped cream is hard to beat! If you love pies, or desserts, for that matter, you’ll love this banoffee pie recipe.
The banoffee pie has been around for decades, but it hit the mainstream thanks to Starbucks, who featured the luscious pie in its menu a few years ago. Now, everyone knows and loves the banoffee pie. Well, here’s some news for you — you can make banoffee pie at home, and it’s as easy to make as it is delightful! Here’s what you need to know.
What is a Banoffee pie, anyway?
The banoffee pie was created in the 1970s in England in The Hungry Monk Restaurant in East Sussex. The restaurant doesn’t exist anymore, but the legend lives on; their banana pie with its crumbly pie crust and endless layers of sheer pleasure is now world famous. Every banoffee pie recipe starts with a graham pie crust. Fudge chocolate and coffee become one for the rich pie filling, topped with ripe bananas and a hefty layer of whipped cream; what’s not to love? Fudge caramel is the final touch, and the result is glorious.
How to Make a Banoffee Pie?
To make a banoffee pie at home that’ll make Starbucks jealous, you need to follow three easy steps:
- Make the pie crust. Make your own pie crust in a pie mold with graham crackers and melted butter, but don’t worry, the classic banoffee pie needs not to be baked but refrigerated. Aren’t no-bake pie recipes the best?
- Layer the chocolate and bananas. You’ll need ripe bananas; make sure they’re genuinely ripe; if they have brown spots, even better. We’ll layer the bananas over a chocolaty layer of fudge chocolate flavored with coffee.
- Top with whipped cream, garnish and chill. Finally, you’ll need whipped cream and fudge caramel for the garnish. The rest is letting the pie set in the fridge until firm.
Banoffee Pie Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
The original banoffee pie was made with bananas and toffee, caramelized condensed milk, plus butter. The recipe has changed since then, and chocolate fudge and caramel are now more popular alternatives to toffee.
The banoffee pie became insanely fashionable in the USA in the 80s, leading people to believe it was American made. Still, its creator, British Nigel Mackenzie, offered £10,000 to anyone that could disprove he was the dessert’s inventor — his claim remained undisputed.
Commonly, this creamy dessert needs no side to shine. Still, you can enjoy it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and having extra caramel fudge for drizzling is always a good idea.
