Cookies and Cream Cake Cooking Tips

cookies and cream cake cooking tips

First things first, let’s talk about making the perfect cookies and cream cake. Here are some tips to make sure your cake turns out amazing every time:

Use High-Quality Ingredients

The cookies are the star of the show here, so make sure you’re using high-quality ones. Oreo cookies are a classic choice but feel free to use your favorite brand.

Don’t Overmix the Batter

When adding the crushed cookies to your batter, mix just until combined. Overmixing can cause the cookies to break down too much, causing the cake to lose that wonderful crunchy texture.

Crush the Cookies Properly

Mix fine crumbs and larger pieces. The fine crumbs will blend into the batter, adding flavor. On the other hand, the larger chunks will give you that delightful crunch.

Use Room Temperature Ingredients

Doing this helps the batter mix more evenly, resulting in a smoother texture. Remove the butter, eggs, and cream cheese from the fridge about 30 minutes before you start baking.

Layer the Cake

For an extra special touch, layer the cake with cookies and cream filling. Put a generous amount of frosting between each layer and sprinkle in some extra cookie pieces.

Chill Before Serving

Put your cake in the fridge for at least an hour after frosting it. This helps the frosting set and makes the cake easier to slice.

What to Serve With Cookies and Cream Cake

what to serve with it

Now that you’ve baked your perfect cookies and cream cake, you might be wondering what to serve with it. Here are some ideas that complement your delicious dessert:

Coffee or Milk

Another classic pairing is a hot cup of coffee or a glass of cold milk. The coffee’s bitterness balances out the cake’s sweetness, while the milk feels like a natural fit.

Whipped Cream

Add a dollop of whipped cream on top of each slice. It’s light and airy, which complements the dense cake nicely.

Fruit Compote

If you’re feeling fancy, make a quick fruit compote. Heat up some berries with a bit of sugar and lemon juice until they’re syrupy. Drizzle this over each slice for a special treat.

How to Store Cookies and Cream Cake

how to store it

Finally, let’s talk about storing your cookies and cream cake. Here’s how to do it:

Refrigerating Your Cake

Store your cake in the refrigerator, especially because it has buttercream frosting. Then, cover it with plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container. Doing this prevents it from drying out or absorbing other odors.

Freezing Your Cake

If you need to store the cake for a longer period, you can freeze it. Cut the cake into slices. Then, wrap each slice with plastic wrap. Place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. This way, you can take out a single slice whenever you’re craving a treat.

Room Temperature

If you plan to eat the cake within a day or two, it’s fine to keep it at room temperature. Just be sure to cover it to keep it fresh.

Reheat Before Serving

If you prefer your cake slightly warm, you can reheat it in the microwave for 10 to 15 seconds. This is especially nice if you’re serving it with ice cream.

Ingredients

Cake

14 Oreos, roughly chopped

2⅓ cups all-purpose flour

¼ cup cornstarch

½ tsp baking soda

1 tsp baking powder

½ tsp salt

1⅔ cups white granulated sugar

½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature

3 large eggs, room temperature

½ cup unflavored vegetable oil

1¼ tbsp vanilla essence/extract

1 tsp white vinegar

1½ cups (337 g) buttermilk, room temperature

Buttercream Frosting

14 blended Oreos

1½ cups unsalted butter, room temperature

2¾ cups powdered sugar

1½ tsp vanilla essence/extract

1½ tbsp milk or whipping cream

Decoration (optional)

3 crushed Oreos

4 blended Oreos

10 whole Oreos

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 320°F or 160°C.
  2. Grease and/or line two 8-inch cake tins.
  3. Roughly chop 14 Oreos and set them aside.
  4. Sift together the flour, cornstarch, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix well and set aside.
  5. Mix the butter, oil, and sugar with an electric mixer for about two minutes until light and creamy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well between each addition.
  6. Mix in the vanilla extract, vinegar, and ½ cup of buttermilk until combined.
  7. Fold half of the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined.
  8. Add the remaining buttermilk, then fold in the remaining dry ingredients until just combined. Do not overmix.
  9. Gently fold in the chopped Oreos.
  10. Divide the batter evenly between the two cake tins. Then, bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  11. Let the cakes cool in the tins for 15 to 20 minutes. Next, transfer them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. For the frosting, blend 14 Oreos to fine crumbs and set aside. In a stand mixer bowl, combine the icing sugar, butter, vanilla, and milk.
  13. Mix on low speed until combined, then increase to medium-high speed and beat for 10 minutes, scraping the bowl halfway through. Mix in the Oreo crumbs on medium speed until well combined.
  14. Next, place the first cake layer on your cake stand. Spread a generous amount of the buttercream frosting on top. Then, sprinkle three crushed Oreos over the buttercream for added texture.
  15. Place the second cake layer on top. Cover the top and sides of the cake using the remaining buttercream, saving a little for piping. Smooth the sides with a cake scraper.
  16. Then, fill a piping bag with the remaining buttercream and pipe swirls around the top edge. Next, blend four Oreos to fine crumbs and press them gently onto the sides of the cake. Place the whole Oreos on top of each buttercream swirl.
  17. Let it chill in the fridge. Enjoy your cookies and cream cake!
